Incubating

Memmert incubators provide a controlled, contaminant-free environment for safe, reliable work with cell and tissue cultures by regulating conditions such as temperature, humidity, and CO2.

Finding the correct size for your particular application is an easy task, with sizes ranging from small tabletop units to large units up to 75 cubic feet. Laboratory incubators are essential for cell and tissue culture, biochemical and hematological studies, and pharmaceutical work.

To assure consistent and meaningful results, incubators used for these types of research need to feature tight parameter control, uniformity and stability over long periods of time.  Integrated touch-screen displays, programmable alarms, data storage, and removable shelves are additional design improvements that focus on making laboratory incubators easy and more convenient to use.

Types of Laboratory Incubators

  1. CO2 Incubator: Regulates temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration to ensure optimal growth conditions for cells. CO2 incubators are widely used in biomedical research, pharmaceuticals and clinical applications such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and tissue engineering.
  2. Compressor Cooled Incubator: Uses a refrigeration system with a compressor to maintain a constant and precise temperature. This type of incubator is ideal for the cultivation of thermophilic organisms and for applications requiring a wide temperature range. The compressor cooler incubator is energy-intensive due to the use of a compressor, but it offers stable and precise temperature control for sensitive applications.
  3. Forced Circulation Incubator: Uses a fan to circulate the air inside the chamber, providing uniform temperature distribution and faster heat transfer. This type of incubator is ideal for applications requiring high precision and accuracy, such as in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. The forced circulation incubator also has a low risk of contamination due to the constant airflow, making it a popular choice for cell culture applications.
  4. Natural Convection Incubator: Relies on the natural movement of air inside the chamber to distribute heat evenly, rather than using a fan or other forced air mechanism. This type of incubator is ideal for applications not requiring high precision, such as for culturing bacteria or general-purpose storage. The natural convection incubator typically has a low energy consumption and a low noise level compared to other types of incubators.
  5. Peltier Cooled Incubator: Uses a thermoelectric cooling technology called the Peltier effect to maintain a consistent temperature inside the incubator. The Peltier effect is achieved by passing an electric current through a thermoelectric module containing two semiconductor materials. One side of the module becomes cool, while the other side becomes hot. In a Peltier cooled incubator, the cool side is used to lower the temperature inside the chamber. Peltier Cooled incubators are often used in biological and medical research to maintain a stable temperature and environment for experiments, cell cultures and other applications that require precise temperature control.
