Peltier Effect Cools Climate Chambers for 10 Years

The last time you went on a picnic, you may have kept your food cold using the Peltier effect without realizing it. If you own an “electric” cooler that plugs into the 12V outlet in your car you’re chilling your food without the need for ice or compressors and coils.

Your electric cooler is actually a thermoelectric cooler and it operates using Peltier technology and a Peltier element. Peltier elements use electric currents to transfer heat from one material to another. In the case of your picnic cooler, it transfers heat from the inside surface to the outside surface — allowing you to use mayonnaise on your sandwiches without worry. Because the cooling effect is driven by electricity, mechanical parts (compressors) and chemicals (coolants) aren’t needed.

Peltier effect devices are used for thermoelectric cooling when more conventional cooling methods are impractical, such as keeping a refrigerator in a car. It’s most practical on a small scale which makes it ideal for things like coolers, electronic components, CPUs, and of course — climate chambers.

Peltier technology’s great advantage on a smaller scale is that it uses less energy than conventional cooling methods without producing greenhouse gasses. In typical conditions, a Peltier cooled climate chamber will save 40% in operating costs compared to compressor cooled equipment because energy is only required if cooling is needed.

Peltier Cooled Climate Chambers

Memmert introduced its first Peltier cooled HPP constant climate chamber 10 years ago. Since then it has become its most successful product group and for good reason. In addition to being environmentally-friendly, Peltier technology offers the precision and durability that lab managers and scientists require for success.

Peltier technology ensures that the climate chamber heats and cools seamlessly with one system which minimizes vibration and noise. Because it doesn’t use a compressor, maintenance costs are reduced significantly over the life of the equipment.

Tests in a climate chamber are usually performed at constant temperatures over a long period of time. This is why precise temperature maintenance and energy efficiency are must-haves. Peltier technology is designed to meet both of those criteria without sacrificing one for the other.

Furthermore, the desired temperature is maintained uniformly throughout the chamber so that identical test conditions can be achieved regardless of the size of the sample or the number of samples in the chamber. Finally, Peltier technology produces a closed cooling system so no outside air is exchanged. The chamber doesn’t need to be de-humidified which greatly reduces the risk of contamination.

So, with Peltier technology, you really can have it all in a climate chamber: precision, accuracy, reproducibility, cost-savings, and sustainability. Give us a call to schedule a demonstration. (262) 594-3941
